    Very warm temperatures are forecast for the entire country. Winds will be out of the north, northeast, mild in the west, moderate to strong in the east and very strong in the Aegean region. Temperatures in Athens will range from 26-37 C and in Thessaloniki from 24-34 C.

    [02] Preparations for PM Simitis' visit to Thessaloniki

    The local Pasok office of Thessaloniki will conduct an informal meeting at the city's 'Electra Palace Hotel' tomorrow in order to discuss the preparations for Prime Minister Simitis' upcoming visit on September 5,6 and 7th for the opening of the 68th International Trade Fair. The meeting will be presided by the secretary of the Pasok Central Committee, Mihalis Chrisohoidis.

    [03] Deputy Foreign Minister Magriotis to visit Cyprus

    Deputy Foreign Minister, Giannis Magriotis will conduct a two-day visit to Cyprus this Sunday and Monday following an invitation of Cypriot Foreign Minister, Giorgos Iakovou.

    During his visit, Mr. Magriotis will address the 13th World Conference of Cypriots Abroad, which will be inaugurated by the president of the Cypriot Republic, Tasos Papadopoulos. Mr. Magriotis will also meet with the state and political leadership of Cyrpus.

    [04] Karamanlis sents condolence letter to U.N. Secretary General

    The leader of the New Democracy Party, Konstantinos Karamanlis sent a letter of condolence to United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Anan on the occasion of last Tuesday's terrorist bombing at the United Nations offices in Baghdad. In his letter, Mr. Karamanlis expressed his sorrow over the tragic deaths of Special U.N. envoy to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello and the local and foreign U.N. staff members who perished working for peace and security in Iraq.

    [05] Global first in security measures for Greece's Attiko Metro

    Within the framework of security and protection measures for passengers from fires and possible terrorist acts involving deadly gases in the metro's tunnels the Attiko Metro will purchase detectors of chemical substances and explosives and 24 thousand gas masks.

    According to today's announcement, 175 gas masks, which will cover the entire head, will be packed in special airtight boxes and placed in a specially designated area of each train car. The masks may be used in the event of a chemical or biological attack or in the event of a fire or smoke in the train tunnels in order to prevent unnecessary loss of life or asphyxiation. The gas mask installation on the Attiko Metro will be a global first.

    [06] Slain U.N. Iraq chief's body begins journey home

    International officials vowed today their work in Iraq would go on as they paid their last respects to the head of the U.N. mission in the country, one of 24 people killed in this week's devastating truck bomb attack. In a ceremony at Baghdad airport before Sergio Vieira de Mello's body was placed on a plane to begin a journey back to his native Brazil, a colleague revealed one of his dying wishes was that the United Nations continued to operate in Iraq.

    Underscoring the continuing volatility and violence of postwar Iraq, the U.S. military said a gunman had shot dead a serviceman on duty with a Marine unit on Thursday in the town of Hilla, 100 km south of Baghdad.

    [07] Israel kills militant in Nablus

    Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian militant and wounded two others when they opened fire at a hospital in the West Bank city of Nablus today according to hospital officials and witnesses. Witnesses said the three Palestinian militants being sought by Israel were sheltering in a small rooftop room of Rafidya hospital in Nablus. Soldiers shot at the room, killing one and wounding the other two.

    Israeli security sources said soldiers shot at armed militants wanted by Israel for their involvement in a suicide bombing in Israel last week and shooting attacks in the West Bank. The army said it was checking the report. Palestinian sources identified the three Palestinians as members of the militant al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an offshoot of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.

    [08] New Internet threat

    The fast-spreading computer virus already blamed for slowing or shutting down e-mail systems worldwide was programmed to coordinate a new type of attack, antivirus experts said today. Instructions written into the «Sobig» virus, which began appearing Tuesday, call for infected Windows machines to try to download a program of unknown function as early as 3 p.m. (1900 GMT) Friday.

    [09] Nearly 100 dead in Nigeria

    Nearly 100 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured in ethnic warfare that has rocked the southern Nigerian oil city of Warri in the past week, the Nigerian Red Cross said today. The clashes between the Ijaw and Itsekiri groups are rooted in disputes over oil wealth and political power.

    The clashes were the worst in the Niger Delta region since March, when an Ijaw revolt led to scores of deaths and forced oil multinationals to abandon 40 percent of OPEC-member Nigeria's production.
