[08] 75 killed in Iraq mosque bomb

A car bombing killed 75 Iraqis, including a top Shi'ite Muslim leader, today in an apparent assassination that dealt a grave blow to the U.S. occupation and left carnage at the holiest shrine of Shi'ism. The blast tore through worshippers as they streamed away from today's prayers in the Imam Ali mosque in the holy city of Najaf. It was by far the worst such atrocity in Iraq since the U.S.-led war toppled Saddam Hussein in April.

[09] Deputy UK premier quits amid Iraq probe

Alastair Campbell, a top government aide often called the second most powerful man in Britain and a key figure in a major crisis over the government's Iraq policy, announced today that he is to resign in the next few weeks. Campbell, who has been at the center of media allegations that Tony Blair's office manipulated intelligence about Iraqi weapons in the run-up to war, said he was stepping down for personal reasons as the prime minister's media chief.

Campbell has fiercely denied allegations he "sexed up" a dossier on Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, and intelligence chiefs have backed up his version of events. But his decision to step down is likely to be seen as an admission that somebody in government must accept blame for what has become the biggest crisis of Blair's six years in power. The dispute over Iraq and the death of a key government scientist caught up in the crisis has damaged public trust in Blair and the government.
