[05] Three held in hunt for Iraq mosque bombers

U.S. forces and Iraqi police have detained three people in connection with the car bomb attack that killed a top Shi'ite cleric and scores of his followers according to a senior U.S. military officer today. Tens of thousands thronged the Shi'ite holy city of Najaf to mourn those killed by the bombing.

Hospital officials said the death toll from the blast was at least 95. Prominent among the dead was Ayatollah Mohammed Baqer al-Hakim, a moderate Shi'ite religious and political leader who had advocated cautious cooperation with the occupiers. In Baghdad, thousands of Shi'ites marched through the city centre to lament the death of Hakim. They called on the occupying forces to end widespread lawlessness.

[06] Russian nuclear submarine sinks killing nine

-A Russian nuclear-powered submarine sank in stormy Arctic seas today, killing nine servicemen, as it was being towed into port for scrapping. The K-159 sank onto the seabed 170 metres down in the Barents Sea, but officials said the 40-year-old vessel's nuclear reactors had been shut down in 1989 when it was decommissioned and they discounted an ecological threat. An environmental pressure group, however, said water was likely to seep into the reactors and that radiation levels in the area would have to be watched closely.

In Italy, President Vladimir Putin, who suffered badly in the political fallout from the sinking of the Kursk nuclear submarine in the Barents three years ago when 118 servicemen were killed, vowed a thorough investigation.

[07] Israeli missile strike kills militants in Gaza

An Israeli army helicopter fired several missiles at a car in the Gaza Strip today, killing two Hamas militants in the latest violence battering a U.S.-backed peace initiative. Palestinian Information Minister Nabil Amr said the attack in the Bureij refugee camp destroyed any chance for talks with Israel to resume and called on the United States to interfere and halt the cycle of violence.

In a separate Gaza incident, an eight-year-old Palestinian girl was killed by an Israeli tank shell while riding her bike near her home in Khan Younis, a town adjacent to a Jewish settlement. The army was checking the report. Palestinian security officials said Abdullah Aqel, the leader of the Islamic group's military Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades in central Gaza, was killed in today's missile strike in Gaza along with Brigades member Farid Mayet.
