    A cloudy day is forecast, with rain and storms in the northern and western parts of the country.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 14 to 25 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 12 to 21 degrees.

    [02] PM meets with ministers in view of EU summit

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis today had discussions with Foreign Minister George Papandreou and National Economy Minister Nikos Christodoulakis, in view of the upcoming European Union summit meeting to be held on Thursday and Friday in Brussels, with the intergovernmental conference for the EU constitution as the main topic on the agenda.

    [03] Development minister admitted to hospital

    Development Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos was admitted to the intensive care unit of an Athens hospital today, suffering from thrombosis. The minister is receiving treatment and is expected to remain in intensive care for at least the next two days.

    [04] Powell and Gul to visit Athens next week

    US Secretary of State Colin Powell is expected next week in Athens, as is the Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul. However, government spokesman Christos Protopappas denied that there would be a trilateral meeting between Greece, Turkey and the United States in the Greek capital.

    [05] Funeral of state official involved in demolition of villas

    The funeral was held today of a finance ministry official, 52-year-old Ribini Stathea, who had been involved in procedures for the demolition of illegally built seaside villas. Her husband ' a member of the ruling Pasok party- called on the Prime Minister to personally intervene, to ensure that the circumstances of her suicide were fully investigated.

    [06] Tensions escalate in church row

    In an effort to smooth the extremely strained relations between the Church of Greece and the Orthodox Patriarch in Constantinople, Foreign Minister George Papandreou today called for a spirit of unity to prevail. However, both the Ecumenical Patriarch Vatholomeos, and Archbishop Christodoulos have vowed that they will not back down in their clash over the jurisdiction of some northern Greek dioceses.

    [07] State doctors and muncipal employees start 48-hour strike

    State hospitals throughout the country will operate only with skeleton staff tomorrow and Friday, due to a 48-strike by doctors, while state ambulance personnel plan a work stoppage tomorrow. They will be joined by municipal employees ' including garbage collectors ' as well as court officials, who will stage a 48-hour walkout, starting tomorrow.

    US President George W. Bush today condemned an attack that killed three Americans in Gaza and blamed the violence on the failure of Palestinians to create an effective security force.

    [09] Split vote likely on US-drafted resolution

    The UN Security Council appeared headed towards a split vote today, on a US-drafted resolution, aimed at getting international approval for the American-led occupation and reconstruction of Iraq.
