[06] Turkish Cypriots protest imported votes claim

Thousands of Turkish Cypriots protested in Nicosia today at what they say are efforts by leader Rauf Denktash to win a key December election by granting

citizenship to mainland Turks. His opponents accuse veteran Turk Cypriot leader Denktash of bringing mainland Turks to the island who share his distaste for

a U.N. peace plan aiming to end the decades-old division of Cyprus and allow it to enter the European Union reunited in May. Denktash refuted the claims on Saturday, saying he was complaining to election officials. He said he expected them to refute the charge so there was no doubt the polls were fair.

After a half-day warning strike, some 3,000 people marched from the Nicosia city walls to a court house where a protest letter was presented to the head of the election board after being read to the crowd. Anti-Denktash parties have vowed to resume negotiations on the U.N. plan if they win the December 14 general election. Under Turkish Cypriot law, a person must live for at least five years in the enclave before he can receive citizenship.
