    [02] Turkish FM arrives in Athens for talks on bilateral issues

    An official visit by Turkish foreign minister Abdullah Gul is taking place in a cordial climate, with both Athens and Ankara expressing their intention to bring the two countries closer together. Greek-Turkish relations, the Cyprus issue, Turkey's bid for European Union entry and illegal immigration are on the agenda of talks being held with his Greek counterpart, George Papandreou.

    [03] IOC delegation to arrive for regular inspection visit

    A large delegation of the International Olympic Committee, headed by Denis Oswald, is expected to arrive in Athens later this evening, to inspect preparations for the 2004 Olympic Games. Meanwhile, despite earlier concerns about delays in the tram and suburban railway projects, the Culture Ministry's general secretary said today that they will be ready on time for visitors' transport to the events.

    [04] Rubbish piles up, as collectors continue their strike

    Municipal garbage collectors today decided to continue their 6-day industrial action, with yet another 48-hour strike, starting tomorrow. This afternoon, the Public Prosecutor's office filed a criminal suit against all those responsible for violating sanitation regulations, citing a report by public health inspectors.

    [05] Strikes continue in the health and education sectors

    An Athens court today declared illegal and abusive a strike by IKA doctors, while state hospital doctors are continuing their walkout until Friday. In the meantime, university professors ' in the 7th week of their strike ' are scheduled to meet with the ministers of Finance and Education tomorrow, in a bid to resolve the stand-off, while striking technical college teachers are meeting this evening to decide on their next moves.

    The lines of communication between the government and the Church of Greece ' concerning the current ecclesiastical crisis ' opened up today, on the occasion of Archbishop Christodoulos' name-day celebration. Prime Minister Costas Simitis sent the head of the Greek church a letter conveying his best wishes, as did the Ecumenical Patriarch, Vatholomeos

    [07] Arafat calls for world action to stop "military madness"

    Palestinian President Yasser Arafat today demanded immediate international action "to stop this military madness," after Israel killed 10 Palestinians, most of them civilians, in air strikes in the Gaza Strip. However, Israel's army said there would be no let-up in its hunt for Islamic militants.

    The United States gave a cautious welcome today to Iran's decision to suspend its nuclear enrichment program and allow nuclear inspections, saying it would be a positive step if implemented.

    [09] Bush threatens to veto $87 billion for Iraq over loans

    The White House threatened today to veto an $87 billion bill for military operations and reconstruction in Iraq, if Congress keeps a Senate-passed provision to convert $10 billion of the package into loans.
