    A partly cloudy and warm day is forecast, with some local showers in the western, central and northern parts of the country.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 18 to 29 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 17 to 24 degrees.

    [02] Turkish FM winds up visit to Athens

    An official visit by Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul wound up this afternoon, after a meeting with Prime Minister Costas Simitis. The Prime Minister described 2004 as an important year for the Cyprus issue and for Turkey ' particularly in relation to its candidacy to join the European Union, for which, however, he noted, it would have to take some progressive steps.

    [03] Striking garbage collectors to face court tomorrow

    Piles of refuse on the streets of Athens and other major urban centres continue to grow, as legal action brought by the Interior Ministry against striking garbage collectors is scheduled to be heard by a court tomorrow. However, the strikers insist that they will continue their industrial action, calling for the support of the powerful civil servants union.

    [04] End to university professors' strike in sight

    A breakthrough seems likely in the ongoing walkout by university professors, after Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis offered them a better pay deal today. Their federation will meet tomorrow to discuss the new proposal, which Education Minister Petros Efthymiou said paved the way for a fruitful dialogue.

    [05] Parliamentary debate on Greece's EU course

    At a party leaders' debate in parliament today on Greece's prospects in a new, enlarged European Union, Prime Minister Costas Simitis pointed out that the country had achieved significant development in all sectors, with emphasis on welfare spending and reduction in unemployment. However, main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis charged that economic convergence with other major EU countries was in name only, not in fact.

    [06] Judge says terrorist group had political motivation

    At the ongoing trial of the November 17th terrorist group, the presiding judge, Michalis Margaritis, surprised the court today in statements addressed to the defendants. He did not view them as common criminals, he said; they were facing trial because they had political motivation and visions of a classless society. However, he underlined that this did not minimise the gravity of their actions and they would be judged within the framework of the Constitution and the law.

    [07] Tram and urban railway will be ready for games says official

    The Athens tram and urban railway will be ready in good time for the 2004 Olympic Games, the Culture Ministry General Secretary, Costas Kartalis, said today, despite fears to the contrary, expressed by IOC officials. The two projects are crucial for the public transport system planned for the games, which begin on August 13.

    [08] Albanian-born student declines his right to carry Greek flag

    An Albanian-born high school student ' who has consistently topped his class in a northern Greek town ' today gave up his right to carry the Greek flag at the head of a parade on the October 28 national holiday, after strong protests from pupils and their parents. Responding, the Confederation of Students' Parents described the protests as "unacceptable," and Education Minister Petros Efthymiou insisted that there could not be two categories of citizens.
