[01] His Condition is Serious But Stable Battling for his Life

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon underwent a new emergency operation, which lasted for three hours and was completed successfully. He is now in a critical but stable condition and surgeons managed to stem new bleeding in his brain. This is Sharons third operation since Wednesday night, when he was hastily admitted to hospital after suffering a massive stroke. "During the surgery the cranial pressure was released and some of the blood clots that remained from the previous surgery were drained," Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef, director of Jerusalems Hadassah hospital, told reporters. He also said a scan after the operation showed "significant improvement" in his brain and added his condition is still critical but stable. The next hours are viewed as critical for Ariel Sharon, who is hospitalised in the ICU in deep coma. Doctors underlined it would take a few days before estimating any damages caused by the cranial bleeding.

[02] He Was Hastily Admitted Sharon in Surgery

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is fighting to stay alive after the major stroke he suffered on Wednesday night. He is still hospitalised in deep coma and this morning he was hastily taken to the operating theatre in Hadassah hospital to stop a new cerebral haemorrhage. Doctor Shlomo Mor-Yosef, head of the hospital, said the scan showed an enlarged ventricle. "There was an increase in cranial pressure and there were changes in the blood pressure," he said. However, doctors said his condition is stable and it would take a few days before estimating any damages caused by the bleeding.

[03] With Grandeur and Devoutness Celebration of the Epiphany

The Epiphany was celebrated with grandeur and devoutness throughout Greece. In Piraeus, Metropolitan Bishop Kallinikos officiated the benediction of the waters in the presence of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, Ministers, and representatives from political parties and local authorities. After the celebration, the political and state leadership visited the Piraeus Town Hall, where the Mayor and the town council welcomed them. "We are all on the same boat," stressed the Prime Minister, while receiving a present from Piraeus mayor Christos Agrapidis. In Athens, the benediction of waters was held at the National Swimming Pool in the presence of the Athens Mayor, the Ministers of Economy, Education and Interior and PASOK Parliamentarians. In Thessaloniki, young men dived into the cold waters of the Thermaikos gulf. Metropolitan Bishop Anthimos of Thessaloniki officiated the benediction. In Elassona, Larissa, the benediction of the waters was overshadowed by a tragic incident, as one of the young men that fell in lake Kefalovrysou to get the cross, stuck at the bottom of the lake and died. An EMAK crew was notified at once and retrieved the body of the unfortunate 19-year-old Christos Meletis.

Ancient Customs

Pappougera, an ancient custom, is always revived during the Epiphany in Kali Vrisi, Drama. Young men dressed with sheepskins and wearing masks from animal skin wander around the village casting out evil spirits and giving wishes. In Nea Karvali, Kavala, the kalikantzaroi (trolls) bid farewell to the real world, dancing around a big fire.

[04] As per New Death Toll Dead in Mecca Increase

At least 53 people lost their lives when a hotel collapsed in Mecca on Thursday, according to the new death toll released today by the Saudi Arabian Civil Protection Authority head. What is more, 64 people sustained injuries due to the collapse, while hundreds of policemen have blocked off Gaza street, where the multi-storey hotel was located. "We may find some more people under the rubble, but we are looking to finish our work today and reopen the road," operations chief Alwani Jeddawi said.

[05] Seven Dead in Pakistan

Seven people were buried under the mud and 18 more were injured because of a landslide cause by the heavy snowfalls in north Pakistan. Rocks fell on a bus en route from Dasou to Silas in Karakoroum. "Nine of the 18 injured are in critical condition," said a local police official. The Karakoroum road artery links Pakistan to China and passes by the areas afflicted by the 8 October destructive quake.

[06] Seven Americans Dead Suicide Attacks in Iraq

Two US soldiers lost their lives on Thursday during a suicide attack against an Iraqi Police recruitment centre in Ramadi, west of Baghdad. 67 Iraqis died from the blast, which also killed a marine and a soldier from the 2nd Division, announced the US army. Five more soldiers died on Thursday south of Kerbala, during a bomb attack against their convoy.
