[01] Manhunt for Seisidis Ongoing Investigations

The police are continuing their search to locate and arrest Simos Seisidus, who allegedly participated in the bloody robbery in the centre of Athens. According to information, his face appeared on the tapes from the security cameras in Chatzichristou Arcade, while shop-owners have also testified that they recognised the accomplice of Giannis Dimitrakis, who continues to remain in the Athens General Hospital, but his condition is not critical. Today, he was visited by Examiner Manolis Foukarakis, accompanied by First Instance Prosecutor Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos, who handed him the bill of indictment. However, the 28-year-old was not in a position to testify, so the Examiner and the Prosecutor will return to the hospital on Tuesday.

Sweeping Areas throughout Athens

In the meantime, the police investigations are continued at a rapid pace. Police teams are concentrating in the suburbs of Vyronas, Gyzi and Zografou, as well as other areas of Athens, in order to locate 30-year-old Simos Seisdidis, who has an arrest warrant pending against him.

According to information, the police have evidence at hand, as well as testimonies of shop owners who saw him at the scene, linking him to the bloody robbery at the National Bank of Greece. As per the same sources, his face appeared on the tapes from the security cameras in Chatzichristou Arcade. In addition, the same sources revealed that, in an effort to throw the authorities off, the wanted man appeared at Vyronas Police Station, wearing a black jacket and jeans, two hours before the robbery. Seisidis has to appear at the Police Station on 1 and 16 of very month, as he was conditionally released from prison for a previous offence.

Another lead to the investigations was the location of some 50,000 euros in a safe deposit box held by Giannis Dimitrakis at an Emporiki Bank branch on 56 Akadimias Street. The authorities believe that the members of the gang "robbers in black" possibly own more safe deposit boxes and their discovery could lead to other people or punishable acts, and further criminal proceedings could be brought.

It should be noted that a 28-yaer-old student, who was summoned to the Police headquarters in order to testify regarding the case, has been released, as the interrogation did not reveal anything against him.

[02] Weather Deterioration as of Sunday Cold Coming In

As of Sunday noon, Greece is expected to fall in the grip of extreme cold weather conditions, which will culminate in the middle of the coming week. Fierce storms, heavy snowfall, northerly gales and significant temperature drop by 12 degrees are the main features of the cold wave to hit the country. According to meteorologists, the polar cold is coming in from Siberia and has already affected many countries. The Civil Protection Authority is already in a state of alert, advising citizens to take all necessary self-protection measures. Doctors underlined that vulnerable groups should be extra cautious.

Snowfall Expected Even in Athens

The weather will gradually take a turn for the worse as of Saturday night with rainfalls, however things will get even worse on Sunday.

According to weather forecasts, cloud cover will fall across the country, turning into rainfalls and storms as of Sunday noon, mainly affecting western, central and southern Greece, as well as the eastern Aegean sea. The extreme weather conditions will be even worse in the Peloponnese, Crete, the Cyclades, Sterea and Thessaly. Mountainous Greece will experience snowfall, while it will also snow in Northern Greece, in areas of low altitude.

The wintry scenery will change all together on Monday and Tuesday. Snow will fall across Greece, even at the heart of Athens, while gales will be blowing in from the north, reaching 10 on the Beaufort scale in the Aegean sea.

At the same time, temperatures are expected to drop a lot even in areas, where there will have been no snow. It could reach minus 10 degrees Celsius in Northern Greece, while in Florina it has already dropped to minus 7 degrees.

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service said the weather would gradually improve as of Wednesday.

State on Alert

The State is on alert to deal with any possible problems that could surface because of the bad weather. Port authorities around the country are ready to offer help to any ships, boats and people that may need it.

The Civil Protection Authority has recommended citizens, among others, to make sure the heating systems in their home are up and running and avoid going out unless there is a serious reason. What is more, those who cannot avoid traveling by car should be equipped with snow chains.

The unexpected weather change and the long exposure to the cold could cause major problems to the vulnerable groups of the population.

According to doctors' advice, people suffering of heart, respiratory and endocrine gland problems should avoid transportations and take care of their nutrition.

[03] Deep Freeze Affecting the Northern Hemisphere Siberian Weather

The northern hemisphere is covered in a cloak of snow and freezing cold. Countries from the Far East to eastern Europe and Scandinavia are caught up in a fierce winter scenery with temperatures reminding of Siberia and try to cope with problems caused by the extreme weather conditions. Temperature in Moscow last night dropped to minus 23 degrees Celsius, showing significant improvement in relation to last weeks temperatures fixed at minus 30 degrees Celsius. However, meteorologists underlined the improvement is temporary and things are going to get worse as of Monday. What is more, five more people in Russia breathed their last because of hypothermia and the death toll has now reached 76 within a week. In neighboring Ukraine, 15 people lost their lives to the lethal deep freeze, while Poland is already counting 123 victims. In southeastern Turkey, where hundreds of villages remain snowbound, eight people died a tragic death when an avalanche swept away the bus they were on. In the usually well-prepared Scandinavian countries, problems were mainly located on transportations. At the same time, Japan is experiencing the most lethal winter of the last twenty years.

Problems and Hardship

In Japan, some 100 people have lost their lives in the past month to the cold in the west and north of the country, while today snow reached Tokyo thus making transport difficult and causing many injuries.

In China, thousands of people have been trapped in railway stations, as ground transportations have been paralysed because of the excessive snowfall.

In Russia, which is experiencing the heaviest winter of the last 26 years, engines are working nonstop to cover the needs in natural gas and electricity, raising expert's concerns that ageing heating systems won't last. Russian energy company Gazprom has already admitted it is not in a position to cover increased energy needs in European countries, given that domestic consumption is in the red.

Fingrid electricity company in Finland, where temperatures dropped below minus 20 degrees Celsius, warned consumers of insufficiency danger, since Russia decreased electric supply by 30%, while Italy is forced to resort to its own natural gas reserves to cover insufficient delivery.

In Denmark, transport problems and flight cancellations have even affected the royal couple of Norway, which has to travel by train until Oslo.

The frost wave from the artic cycle has also affected Belarus and the Baltic republics of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia, where there are extreme weather conditions. According to meteorological forecasts in Russia, the cold front will move to western Europe through Poland, but will lose its force affected by the milder weather condition in the north Atlantic ocean.

Poland is expected to experience fierce snowstorms, while many village up north have no electricity.

Meanwhile in Turkey, over 3,600 villages in the north and east were effectively cut off from the outside world, the Anatolia news agency said. In the eastern province of Bitlis an avalanche swept a bus into a river, killing eight people and injuring 15 others. Many flights were delayed because of the snow, while the airports of Istanbul and Ankara had to cancel many flights this morning bound for the country's central eastern and southeastern provinces. Mercury dropped to minus 8 degrees Celsius at night in Ankara and to minus 10-15 in the provinces of eastern Anatolia.

In Romania, heavy snowfalls caused problems to the electricity network, while there were also problems with transports.

[04] Part of the Extra-Judicial Network Investigation Testimonies in Korydallos

Continuing his investigation on the extra-judicial network, Supreme Court Deputy Prosecutor Giorgos Sanidas visited the Korydallos prison this morning, in order to take the testimonies of remand-in-custody lawyers Sakis Kechagioglou and Giorgos Nikolakopoulos, regarding the litigation between Maria Kestekoglou and Anastasios Bizakis. Kechagioglou's associates, including Christina Valinaki, had been appointed to handle the case.

Kechagioglou and Nikolakopoulos were called to testify as suspects for moral accessory to breach of duty. It is reminded that Kechagioglou's associates had handled the litigation in question and will be called to testify in the coming week. According to information, so far nothing has come up against Christina Valinaki from the marathon testimonies.

Mr Kechagioglou testified for 8 hours in the presence of his lawyer, Dimitris Tsovolas, who said his client described in full detail and accuracy the true events and repeated his incarceration is illegal. Giorgos Nikolakopoulos started testifying right after Kechagioglou.

In the meantime, asked regarding Christina Valinaki's testimony to the examiner for the extra-judicial network, deputy government spokesperson Evangelos Antonaros stressed it is every citizen's obligation, when called to testify, to respond to the call of the judicial authorities.

[05] During a Sensitive Period for Kosovo Ibrahim Rugova Passed Away

The President of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, passed away this morning aged 61 of lung cancer. Rugovas death came at a very sensitive time, as negotiations under the auspices of the UN have started since last November to define the final regime at the Yugoslavian province, which is mostly populated (90%) by Albanians. An avid supporter of Kosovos independence, Rugova would be head of negotiations for the Albanian side. Last September, he had announced he had been affected by lung cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. Kosovo Parliament Speaker Nexhat Daci will act as interim president.

Condolences

"Kosovo lost a historic leader, who devoted his life to protecting and promoting the rights of its citizens, " said EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana, asking the leaders of Kosovo to stand united and show responsibility. The European Commission paid its respects to Rugova, underlining his dedicated his whole life to achieving a peaceful solution of problems.

FYROM President Branko Crvenkovski spoke of a great loss and voiced the hope that Rugova's death will not trigger a destabilisation in the area, nor affect negotiations concerning the regime in Kosovo. The FYROM government also voided its sorrow, stressing Rugova was a politician, who constructive stance offered a great deal to the safety and stability in the area.

In an announcement, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister asked the successors of the deceases to adopt his wisdom and realistic approach, noting his death came at a politically complex time.

The political leadership of Albania also expressed its condolences to the government and people of Kosovo. Albanian president Alfred Moisiu said Rugova's death is a great loss for the entire Albanian-speaking world, while Premier Sali Berisha described the deceased as a missionary of peace and a valuable friend of the West to the Balkans.

A Few Words on the Deceased

Ibrahim Rugova was born on 2 December 1994 in Cerrc&#235; village, Kosovo. He studied Albanian literature at the University of Pristina and took his master's degree in Paris. During his student years, he was chief editor of two literary magazines published in Kosovo.

He joined politics in 1989 as President of the Kosovo Writers' Union, leading a team of 215 scholars that opposed the change of Constitution in Serbia, which significantly limited Kosovo's independence. For this stand, he was stricken from the Yugoslavian Communist Union.

At the end of 1989, Rugova founded the first political Party in Kosovo, the Democratic League of Kosova (LDK).

Under his guidance on 2 July 1990, Albanian parliamentarians at the local Parliament voted in favour of changing the regime in Kosovo from a Serbian independent territory to a Republic. Three days later, the Serbian parliament ordered the dissolution of the Kosovo parliament, forcing Albanians to found a "parallel government", illegal schools and a university.

During the NATO bombings in 1999, Rugova was under house arrest and after the intervention of foreign leaders, Milosevic was forced to let him leave Kosovo. In the 2002 elections, Rugova was elected president of Kosovo and was reelected again in 2004. In September 2005 he was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent chemotherapy.

[06] It Died Despite Rescue Efforts Whale in the River Thames

Hordes of crowds gathered on the banks of the River Thames for a spectacle that London has not witnessed since at least 1913: a rare 5-meter whale that was swimming in the river since yesterday. The gigantic mammal was spotted in the river by a train passenger in Battersea, on the western part of the British capital. A little while later, passers-by saw the whale swimming past Westminster and Big Ben. From the very first moment, the experts were watching the tired sea giant continue its efforts against the current in awe and dismay and wished that it headed easterly, from where it would be able to swim to open waters. However, their wish did not come true, as the whale died shortly past 20:00 (CET), although rescuers had carried it to the river's estuary.

Escape Plan for a Giant

Marine experts believe that it drifted so far in from the estuary of the river either because it was sick and lost its bearings, or because it was simply chasing a school of fish. The mammal belongs to the rare species Northern Bottlenosed Whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus), usually found in the North Atlantic.

According to Peter Evans of the Sea Watch Foundation, "Sightings of things like porpoises in the estuary have become more frequent in the past five years - indicating that fish have become more abundant, which in turn shows how much cleaner the river is than it used to be."

Natural History Museum expert Richard Sabin said the museum had been recording strandings since 1913 and that this was the first record of this species for the Thames.

The scientists monitored the whale, which had sustained injuries to its back and tail from impacting with boats tied to the banks of the river, from a safe distance. They waited for the low-tide, which would beach the 3-tonne mammal whale. Although this could be a regrettable development, as the mammal could get injured further, it was the only opportunity for the rescue operation to begin, as specialised personnel were able to approach the whale with special cranes, lift it and keep it safe. Unfortunately, the whale proved to be sick and breathed its last obviously exhausted, while been transferred to the river's estuary.

[07] Nationwide Survey by Metron Analysis Real Estate Gains Value

According to a survey conducted by Metron Analysys and Eurobanks Economic Research and Forecasts Dept, the real estate market will continue to constitute a pole of attraction for Greek consumers. As revealed, the growth prospects in the real estate market are favourable, while demand is expected to continue increasing in the next five years, with an annual rate of 3.5%, as opposed to 2.6% for the period 2004-05 and 2.0% for 2000-03. Eight in ten households believe that the real estate market constitutes a safe investment, although they said the prices in their area will increase by 5-30% in the next 12 months. In addition, the survey pointed out that Greece has one of the highest ownership percentages in Europe, since, according to the 2001 census results, 74% of the families own their own homes.

Safe Investment

According to the survey, which was conducted on a sample of 1,371 households in Attica and another six major urban centres from 1 December 2005 to 9 January 2006, two out of three households own their own home, while two out of three buyers were formerly renting.

Furthermore, 78% of those asked believe that houses are a safe investment, while only 19.2% offered a different opinion.

Moreover, 71% are not willing to sell their home in the near future, as they believe the prices will increase. Specifically, 27% believe that the prices will increase by 15-30%, 38% by 5-15% and 9.4% believe that the prices will remain unchanged.

At the same time, the majority of those asked believes that the prices will continue increasing in the next five years: 26.9% are expecting price increases ranging from 15 to 30% and 38.8% from 5 to 15%, while only 4.3% are expecting the prices to fall.

The results for business properties were also quite interesting, since, following the increases in 2001, the prices have returned to normal levels.

As per the banks economic research departments, the real estate market will demonstrate a positive trend; however, they described the recent increase in objective values, combined with the progress of the European interest rates, as a "significant test."

[08] Great Losses in Wall Street Dow Jones Takes a Dive

On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average of the New York Stock Exchange recorded its greatest loss since 24 March 2003 and wiped out its profits for the year 2006. Dow Jones closed at 10,667.39, down by 213.32 units or 1.96%. The technology-laced NASDAQ Composite Index recorded losses of 54.11 units or 2.35%, closing at 2,247.70, while the Standard and Poors 500 closed at 1,261.49, down by 23.55 units or 1.83%.

[09] Tough Win for Panionios

In the last two minutes of the game, Panionios had a hard time but finally defeated Apollo Patras 83-79 on match day 12 of the Greek A1 Basketball championship. Panionios were in the lead throughout the match, especially in the third period, when they were 10 points ahead of Patras. However, in the last period things loosened up a bit, almost costing them victory, if it had not been for Oikonomou and Avery, ho scored 25 and 20 points respectively. This was Panionios' sixth win in the championship. The score per period: 19-14, 44-36, 63-53, 83-79.

The Greek football team tied 1-1 with South Korea in the friendly match held in Riad, Saudi Arabia, for the LG Cup tournament. The Greek team played making a lot of changes and using new faces in their original lineup, which proved effective in the first half and helped them score. However, in the second half the Greek footballers seemed a bit indifferent and the Koreans made their way through a draw, which is neither good nor bad. Greek captain Thodoris Zagorakis opened the score in the 10', after receiving the ball from Panagiotis Lagos, whom Otto Rehaggel was using for the first time and in fact did pretty good. In the 24', it was Korea's time to score, when Park received the ball and left Nikopolidis standing amazed.

[11] To Be Broadcast by ET-1 on 27 January International Event for Mozart

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary since the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a mammoth international TV event will take place on 27 January, featuring the life and work of one of the greatest musicians and composers of all time. Public TV channel ET-1 has secured the rights to broadcast the production 24hours Mozart live. The programme is a mixture of theatrical and TV co-productions and will represent the media highlight of the Mozart Year 2006. The event will be broadcast via satellite from the Mozart City of Vienna.

During the 24-hour broadcast, ET-1 will transmit live links from famous concert venues in Europe, North America, Japan, Australia and China. Outstanding pre-produced concert recordings, documentaries, music features, short programmes, clips and more will complete the high-profile programme, dedicated to the great figure of music.

The uniquely universal appeal of Mozarts music will be reflected in all its different facets, with selections from his operas, concertos, symphonies, chamber music and sacred works.

In Greece, the show will be hosted by presenter Alexis Kostalas.

The live broadcast, which begins at 8am (local Greek time) on Friday 27 January and concludes at 9am Saturday 28 January, will not include the parts: Mozart from Rammalah, Intermission, Testing Mozart, Mozarts Violin Sonatas-Gil and Orli Shaham K.305.

In place of the programmes that will not be broadcast, the channel will provide live links from ERTs studios on Katechaki Street, where host Alexis Kostalas will talk with notable guest. In addition, the channel will broadcast a tapped concert of ERTs National Symphonic Orchestra and Choir performing works by Mozart (conductor: Nikos Christodoulou, choir master: Antonis Kontogeorgiou).

[12] Thee Pupils Hospitalised Meningitis Outbreaks on Chios

Three cases of viral meningitis were detected on pupils from Kallimasia Lyceum, in the Municipality of Ionia. The pupils were transferred to the islands hospital, where they are under observation, since their cases are treatable with the appropriate medical care. Chios Prefectorial Self-Government is meeting with the relevant bodies, aiming at organising an event at the local Civic Centre, in order to raise public awareness. At the same time, they are in constant contact with the Lyceum pupils parents, who are monitoring their children so as to notify the authorities if any other cases come up. Finally, the school premises were disinfected, as provided for by the precautionary measures dictated by the Prefectures Health Directorate.
