    By Vagelis Theodorou

Fierce storms, heavy snowfall, northerly gales and vertical temperature drop by 12 degrees Celsius will be the main features of the weather as of the afternoon. According to meteorologists, the polar cold is coming from Siberia and has already hit country ranging from the Far East to eastern Europe and the Balkans. The extreme weather conditions, which are expected to get worse as of Monday and gradually die down as of Wednesday, will affect Attica and meteorologists said it could even snow in Athens. The State is on alert, while doctors advise vulnerable groups to be extra careful.

Speaking on NET, Civil Protection Authority secretary general Panagiotis Fourlas advised citizens to take self-protection measures and asked excursionists to postpone any trips unless there is a serious reason, and stressed the Traffic Police has dispatched units around the national road network.

A meeting is held at the moment at the Public Order Ministry chaired by Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis to deal with any possible problems. In the afternoon, Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos will visit the Civil Protection Authority.
