[04] Determined Farmers at the Roadblocks

Farmers are "assessing" the 620-million-euro support package announced in their support by the government. Meanwhile, the Athens-Lamia national road opened after remaining closed for two hours due the roadblocks. After cutting Greece into to two, farmers were convinced to open the national road, without however ruling out the possibility to use roadblocks again later. During the two-hour blockade hundreds of trucks remained stranded in the national network. The Traffic Police used to stop trucks heading to Athens at Stylida, not allowing them to arrive near Lamia. In parallel, a big number of trucks were immobilised at Kammena Vourla and Bralos.

In parallel, due to roadblocks near Chrisoupoli, and Kerdyllia intersection, Egnatia Odos has also closed and the same applies to the Thessaloniki-Edessa national road due to roadblocks in Halkidona. In parallel, farmers have blocked with their tractors the Kozani-Florina national road. Customs stations in Exhohi and Promahonas remain cut off, while the Kipi tou Evrou border station is also facing problems as it will be cut off anew at 10:00. However, the Promahonas border for Bulgaria has remained closed for about an hour. The farmers have allowed 150 trucks, carrying sensitive products and cars the drivers of which had been trapped since last Tuesday to pass through. The farmers closed again the border when the drivers, who had been cut off at the Bulgarian border took the opportunity and passed in their vehicles to Greek soil. Tractors have also gathered on the 1 kilometre of the Gianitsa-Thessaloniki road, without however creating any problems to the circulation of vehicles, to cars wishing to arrive in Kilkis and to the Evzoni border station. In Crete, farmers have closed the Chania-Heraklion road near Platani.

At the same time, farmers from the Peloponnese have decided to block the Corinth Isthmus as of Monday. Farmers have also lined-up their tractors on the Nea Efesos-Korinos-Eginiou flyover, without however causing any problems to the traffic of vehicles.

The circulation of vehicles in Egnatia Odos on Chrisoupoli is meeting with problems while the circulation of vehicles on the old Kavala-Xanthi national road and the Stavros Amigdaleonas road runs smoothly from time to time.

Roads leading to Komotini are also encountering problems, as well as all roads on the city's exit points.

"Rural Development Minister Sotiris Hatzigakis told NET 105.8 that not a single euro will be given, adding that all should assume their responsibilities. Mr Hatzigakis stressed that the financial aid to farmers covers all possibilities dictated by the EU legislation and the state budget. "I will listen to the farmers today and then I will turn the page as of Monday," he said characteristically.

Furthermore, he stressed that the 620-million-euro package for the restoration of damages in 2008 concerns all producers across Greece.

The packet of aid presented by the minister includes compensations amounting to 425,000,000 euros through ELGA for cotton, corn, grain, olive-oil, edible olives, fruits and stockbreeding.

Also, cotton, tobacco, dry goods and olive producers will also receive an additional 75,000,000 euros as emergency aid. The return of the special consumption tax on fuel will be paid to those who have agriculture as their main profession.
