    News

Authorities said on Friday that at least 9 people were killed and some 10.000 made homelles after tropical cyclone Fanele bringing winds of up to 260km per hour struck the Indian Ocean island this week. Most victims were reported in Morandava resort in the western part of the island.

The homeless have been transferred to churches, schools and a hospital. Two cyclones have hit Madagascar this week. The storm flattened homes left large areas flooded, uprooted trees, destroyed cultivations while electricity and transport has been cut in many regions.

    [02] Intensive Care Wards

The Health Ministry has referred to public prosecutor to investigate denouncements by representatives of the Greek Intensive Care Society, who claim that at least 29.000 patients would not have died if all 2.000 beds in intensive care units nationwide were operating. The Health Ministry speaks of death numbers without scientific proof. However, intensive care doctors underline the shortage of personnel in intensive care units speaking of numbers as high as 4.000 less doctors and 20.000 less nurses.

Closed since 2001 are150 beds in intensive care units due to personnel shortage. If they operated another 3.500 patients would have won the battle for their lives. Thirty patients per year can be treated in each intensive care bed. Treatment in intensive care units is excellent as death rate is under 25%, among the lowest rates in the world.
