  • [01] Socialist Leaders Meet in Chile

    Due to a technical problem of an Air France aircraft that would carry PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) leader George Papandreou to Santiago, Chile forced him to remain in Athens and miss the opening sessions of Socialist leaders on the issue "Progressive ruling: the reply to the world financial crisis in a progressive direction." As Mr Pandreou's associates, who are already in Chile, Mr Papandreou will leave today and arrive in Chile on Saturday.

    "Progressive Ruling -Reply to the World Crisis"

    Socialist leaders are holding a big meeting as of today in Vinia Del Mar, Chile. The meeting has been organized by the Chilean government and President Michelle Bachellet, with the cooperation of the British think tank Policy Network. The meeting is entitled "Progressive ruling: the reply to the world financial crisis in a progressive direction."

    Participating amongst others in the meeting will be Brazilian President Lula da Silva, British PM Gordon Brown, Spanish PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Argentine President Cristina Kirchner and many others. Mr Papandreou is expected to arrive in Santiago on Saturday morning. Thus, he will miss the official lunch, at which he was the central speaker. However, Mr Papandreou will have the opportunity to report his views on the global financial crisis, within the framework of the official meal President Bachellet will host Saturday noon. Then, on Sunday, 30 April, Mr Papandreou will visit New York, where he will attend the last meeting of Stiglitch Committee, before it presents its proposals at the G20 Summit Meeting.

    The meeting will focus on the hammering out of progressive policies that will tackle the world financial crisis, the promotion of a responsible and viable globalization, climate change in a period of world recession, the status of social protection and labour market during globalization, the role of the state in economic development, he contribution of science and novelty in viable development.

    Mr Papandreou will develop his positions in both cases. His positions are based on five axes; the first one concerns the toning of economies and the state's substantial intervention in the society, the second one support to weak and middle classes, the third one the creation of a new development model that will be based on investments and green development. The forth one concerns a wider cooperation among countries and the fifth one the planet's management.

    [02] Plans and Measures for the Crisis

    Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero spoke about additional moves to support the economy, as per the Financial Times. He reported that we have a margin with the debt, adding that the public deficit would be burdened. However, we have a margin for the debt. In parallel, Mr Zapatero aims at aims at taking advantage of the Spanish Presidency in the EU to promote developmental expenses in the sectors of renewable energy sources and bio-technology.

    In the USA, the Republican party, which has criticized strongly the budget proposed by US President Barrack Obama, presented its own plan, which, as it argues, will be smaller repercussions on the public deficit. The 18-page plan, called "Recovery route" will be presented in detail next Wednesday and amongst others it will propose the reduction of taxes for those who earn less than US$100,000 annually. The Democrats believe t that the Republicans continue supporting George Bush's policy.

    However, Google in the US announced yesterday that it is planning to sack 200 employees from the sales and marketing department to reduce expenses, as the company's earnings have dropped du the world recession and financial crisis.
