  • [01] Papariga: KKE Has a Plan to Tackle the Crisis

"KKE has a proposal to tackle the crisis," stressed Aleka Papariga, secretary general of the Greek Communist Party (KKE), in her interview with Kosmos tou Ependyti paper. Papariga ruled out any coalition either before or after the elections, claiming, "The country and the people have nothing to lose in case no party manages to form an independent government."

"It is a strong Conservative or Socialist government they should be afraid of," argued Papariga, further underlining, "It is ridiculous to believe that cameras will stop hooded youths. KKE is not afraid of the spontaneous outburst of the youths and the people," noted she. She finally blasted SYN (Coalition of the Radical Left) "for having nothing to do with the Left. It cannot be trusted and there is never going to be a coalition."

KKE Announcement on the Pension System

"The government, the PASOK leadership and their officials in GSEE and ADEDY pretend they disagree with the European Court ruling, despite the fact that they agree! How is it that those who increased the retirement age limits of women working in the private sector have come to disagree?" read an announcement issued by KKE. It then went on to stress, "The working women along with the entire workforce should punish them and fight for their right to retire at the age of 55."

Finally, KKE called everyone to disobey the EU decisions. "The life and the rights of the working people should be above all, and not the interests of the monopolies expressed by the EU and its parties."

[02] Socialist Leaders Meet in Chile

    Economy -

    News

Socialist International president George Papandreou is participating in the socialist leaders meeting in Chile in the presence of US vice-president Joe Biden. During today's official luncheon, Mr. Papandreou is to brief world leaders on the Stiglitz Committee's decisions regarding the global financial crisis. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet urged fellow world leaders on Friday to shun protectionism and act at next week's G20 summit to overcome the global crisis.

In a press interview UK Prime-minister Gordon Brown said: "One of the messages that must come from next week's summit is that we will reject protectionist tendencies. We will monitor those countries and name and shame if necessary countries that are not following free trade practices, and we will work to underpin the trading system of the world with additional resources. We have got to begin again and remake our institutions. We have got to reshape the rules of the financial system. Deep financial reforms are vital. We need a new IMF." "If the trillions of dollars that are being mobilized to overcome the global financial crisis are used in a wise and creative way, we can today respond internationally to create decent jobs for thousands," said Chile's President Michelle Bachelet.

Among leaders attending Chilean meeting are U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva , Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez and Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez. US vice-president Joe Biden held a bilateral meeting with Argentina's Fernandez on Friday evening, telling her Latin America's relations with the United States, which were strained for years would improve. He also highlighted that the United States's traditional approach regarding Latin America had changed, and is going to change. Vice President Biden transmitted the message that President Obama is ready to talk about all issues at the Summit of the Americas, without exception. That summit is scheduled for mid-April.
