Finance Minister G. Papakonstantinou ruled out imposition of new tax for Social Security Funds in his speech at the meeting of the Social Dialogue Committee on Social Insurance , also attended by Employment Minister Andreas Loberdos. He described imposition of a new tax as ineffective measure during this period of financial crisis. Mr. Papakonstantinou counterproposal was the development of the Funds' assets.

Tuesday's meeting of the Social Dialogue Committee, attended by Finance and Employment Ministers G. Papakonstantinou and A. Loberdos respectively, ruled out imposion of new tax to finance social security funds. The Experts Committee meets again next Tuesday to continue dialogue on structural changes.

"...imposition of new tax to finance SS Funds not feasible at present..."

    George Papakonstantinou

Expounding his positions, Mr. Papakonstantinou underlined that imposition of new tax to finance Funds is not feasible as honest taxpayers would bear the burden of tax evaders. He also underlined that 2010 budget will support but will not be able to give extra finances to Funds and proposed to face the Social Security issue through the development of the Funds' assets, speaking of management or sale of part of its assets to cover cash gaps till structural changes bear fruit.
