  • [01] Iran Signals Shift in Uranium Policy

    Wednesday, 03 February 2010 08:23

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in his statements to state television on Tuesday evening, said Iran was ready to send low enriched uranium abroad in exchange for higher grade nuclear fuel. Media correspondents in the broader region say the decision is a major shift in the Iranian position on the issue while a US official said Washington was "ready to listen if Iran was making a new offer".

    Shift in the Iranian position

For months, Iranian officials publicly criticized the terms of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) plan under which Iran would send 70% of its low-enriched uranium to Russia and France in exchange for more highly enriched fuel. They were unwilling to export the uranium without simultaneously receiving fuel in return. This proposal was unacceptable to the West. President Ahmadinejad told state television that Iran now will have "no problem" giving the West its low enriched uranium and taking it back several months later when it is high grade nuclear fuel. This is in line with a proposal by the United Nations last year.
