GREEK ORCHESTRA HONORS HELLENIC CONTRIBUTION TO WORLD OF MUSIC

Famed composer Stavros Xarhakos will debut at Carnegie Hall on April 29, conducting the State Orchestra of Hellenic Music. The orchestra will present a second concert in New Jersey on May 2 at the Kendall Performance Center on The College of New Jersey campus near Trenton. The State Orchestra of Hellenic Music, founded in 1994 under the leadership of Maestro Xarhakos, is the first publicly-supported instrumental ensemble in Greece dedicated to exploring Greek music from Byzantine times to the present.

The program will include Xarhakos' latest composition "Ode: A Musical Journey through Hellenism," performed on traditional Greek instruments such as bouzouki, baglama, and tsoura, along with conventional western instruments.

A dinner the night before the April 29 Carnegie Hall concert will honor Maestro Xarhakos as well as Maestro Dino Anagnost, Music Director and Conductor of the famed "Little Orchestra Society" at Lincoln Center. A tented dinner reception with the Orchestra after the May 2 Concert will take place at Princeton University for sponsors of the New Jersey event.

Proceeds from the the concerts and dinners will benefit the Gennadius Library in Athens, a treasure house of books and archives dedicated to the preservation of Hellenism. The Library aims to be a leading international center for advanced study and research on the post-antique Greek world. The U.S.'s National Endowment for the Humanities awarded it a $625,000 Challenge Grant, to be matched four-to-one. Proceeds from the Orchestra's visit to the United States will be applied to match the grant. The New York concert is made possible through the generosity of Atlantic Bank of New York.

To receive benefit invitations for the New York combined dinner and concert, contact the Gennadius Library's U.S. offices, (609) 683-0800 or via e-mail at ascsa@ascsa.org. Tickets for just the April 29 concert are available at the Carnegie Hall Box Office (212) 247-7800. Information and tickets for the May 2 New Jersey concert are available at (609) 683-8090.
