    Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning.

    [01] TURKEY HONOURED WITH TWO PRIZES

    Acclaimed Turkish author Yasar Kemal was awarded the peace prize of the German Book Trade on Sunday. The awarding ceremony was attended by key politicians and figures from Germany's cultural and literary society, including Chancellor Helmut Kohl, Parliamentary Speaker Rita Suessmueth and former Federal President Richard von Weizsaecker. Kohl congratulated Kemal and said the writer's works were permeated by a passionate advocacy for justice.

    Late Turkish businessmen Vehbi Koc, in turn, has been presented with the "Man of the World" award of the "Hand In Hand For Peace" foundation for his valuable contributions in the field of education, health, family planning and culture. The award, for the first time given to a Turk, was received by Vehbi Koc's grandson Ali Koc. /All papers/

    [02] SEZGIN BOOSTING TIES IN PRAGUE AND BRATISLAVA

    Defense Minister Ismet Sezgin will pay an official visit to the Czech Republic and Slovakia on Monday in a move to boost defense ties with these countries. SEzgin, accompanied by a high-level military delegation and a group of journalists, will be received at the highest level in Prague and Bratislava. He is expected to meet Czech President Vaclav Havel today. /All papers/

    [03] YILMAZ TO CONTINUE EU TOUR IN NOVEMBER

    Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz will continue his tour of European capitals in November in an attempt to enhance Turkey's EU bid before the final decisions concerning the expansion of the Union are made at the EU December summit. Yilmaz is scheduled to pay visits to Britain, Spain and Italy, but perhaps the most important stop on Yilmaz's tour will be his second visit to Germany to meet again with Chancellor Helmut Kohl to discuss issues he promised to address during his first meeting with the German leader. Yilmaz is expected to meet British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Spanish leader Jose Maria Aznar. /All papers/

    [04] BSEC MEETING IN ISTANBUL

    Ministers of the Interior from the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) countries will come together today in Istanbul. The meeting will start with the opening speech of President Suleyman Demirel. It is reported that at the meeting Turkey will suggest the establishment of a security organization named Blackseapol. The project aims to enhance the struggle against drug smuggling and organized crimes as well as cooperation between member countries. /Milliyet/

    [05] TURCO-ISRAELI MILITARY COOPERATION

    According to Isreali Defense Ministry sources, Israeli Chief of the General Staff Amnon Lipkin Shakak, during his visit to Ankara last week, reached agreements with Turkey for the sale of Merkava tanks, the modernization of F-5 war planes, adaptation of anti-missile systems and production of reconnaissance planes for Turkey.

    A high level Turkish military delegation will hold a tripartite coordination meeting with Israeli and American counterparts to discuss date of joint military exercises to be held in the Eastern Mediterranean. The exercises have been postponed twice previously. /Milliyet/

    [06] "TURKSAT 2A" TO BE LAUNCHED IN 1999

    Transportation Minister Necdet Menzir said that TURKSAT 2A will be launched in 1999. He added that the satellite was a co-production of French AEROSPATIALE firm and Turkey. The new satellite would expand Turkey's market share in Europe and Central Asia, said Menzir. /Cumhuriyet/ Milliyet_

    [07] "IRAN NATURAL GAS WILL BE SOLD TO TURKEY"

    Turkish and Iranian administrations announced that the natural gas pipeline agreement, signed between the two countries last year, was still in force.

    Turkish diplomatic sources reported: "At the moment Iran does not have natural gas. After the construction of a pipeline in line with the agreement, first Turkmenistan natural gas will be transported. Later, if Iran increases its capacity, Iranian natural gas will also be transported through this pipeline. Turkey has energy problems, and she has made agreements to solve this problem. The US D'Amato law is designed to regulate moves of American companies. Turkey does not make any investments in Iranian territories." /Cumhuriyet/

    [08] UN SECRETARY GENERAL WORRIED OVER RAISING TENSIONS IN CYPRUS

    UN Secretary General Kofi Annan expressed concern over reports of rising tension between Greek and Turkish forces engaged in militray exercises in and around Cyprus and warned of the danger of a confrontation. In a statement he strongly urged all parties to abide by Security Council resolutions calling for a reduction in defense spendings and the number of foreign troops on Cyprus.

    Meanwhile, Russia, seeking an active role in resolving the Cyprus conflict, is planning to appoint a special envoy in Cyprus to have representation at the same level as that of the US and Britain. No specific name for the post has been announced yet. /All papers/

    [09] WTO SUMMIT IN ISTANBUL

    Istanbul will host this week the 12th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) where the world's top tourism decision makers will shape the future of one of the world's most important economic sectors. President Suleyman Demirel will address the opening ceremony together with Turkish Tourism Minister Ibrahim Gurdal. The biannual global summit will bring together leaders of the tourism sector and representatives of 130 countries. /Milliyet/

    [10] TURKEY AND RUSSIA PLEDGE COOPERATION IN TOURISM

    The Turkish Association of Travel Agencies (TURSAB) and the Russian Federation Travel Association (RATA) have signed an agreement to develop toourism between Turkey and all countries which were members of the former Soviet Union, the Anatolia news agency reported. The cooperation agreement aims at developing relations between TURSAB and RATA . It calls on the two countries to work together to organize promotional fairs and create projects to expand the market to third world countries.

    [11] TURKEY REACHES 1997 TOURISM TARGETS

    Ministry of Tourism reported that the number of tourists visiting Turkey has reached eight million with an increase of 13.55 percent for the first nine months of 1997. Germany, the Commonwealth Independent States (CIS), and Britain share the first three ranks among countries sending highest numbers of tourists to Turkey. /Hurriyet/

    [12] FENER PATRIARCH FLIES TO US

    Fener Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church Archbishop Bartholomeus has flown to Washington for a one-month visit, the Anatolia news agency reported. Bartholomeus is scheduled to meet top level US officials including President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore and Secretary of State Madeline Albright. Turkey's Ambassador in Washington Nuzhet Kandemir will hold a dinner in honour of Bartholomeus and will accompany him in his meetings.

    [13] BOMB EXPLOSION IN HAKKARI

    One person was killed and 15 were injured as a result of a bomb explosion in Hakkari's town of Yuksekova. A car parked between the police station and the post office exploded. Police officials say the bomb was placed by the separatist PKK organization. Strick security measures have been initiated in teh town to prevent further similar incidents. /All papers/

    [14] TURKISH TROOPS PARTIALLY WITHDRAW FROM NORTHERN IRAQ

    Turkish security forces, who entered Northern Iraq late last month to demolish the outlawed PKK terrorist organization which was preparing for the winter season, are partially withdrawing from the region. The Turkish Armed Forces have accomplished their mission in the region by taking control of all the strategic areas and destroying all PKK bases in Northern Iraq. Nearly 800 terrorists were killed in the operation, huge amounts of ammunition, weapons and logistical stock, including food were seized. /All papers/

    [15] NORTH MARMARA NATURAL GAS FIELD OPENS

    Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz said on Sunday that Turkey must make new investments in the field of energy. Yilmaz stressed that leaving Turkey without energy could have no excuse for his government. Yilmaz spoke during the opening of the Turkish Petroleum Corporation's (TPAO) North Marmara Natural Gas Field. The prime minister said one million cubic meters of natural gas would be produced from the field per day - an amount which would be increased to two million cubic meters within a short period of time. He added that the facility also had the capacity of storing 1.3 billion cubic meters of natural gas. /All papers/
