  • [01] CYPRIOT PRESIDENT - UNSG - CONVERSATION

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has reassured Cyprus President Demetris Christofias that he will continue to support efforts to find a negotiated settlement in the question of Cyprus.

Ban reiterated his personal interest in the Cyprus issue and President Christofias thanked him for the UN efforts towards a solution to reunite the country.

Christofias and Ban had a telephone conversation, according to an official press release, during which the President conveyed his wishes for the new year.

The President of the Republic thanked the UN Secretary General for the help the international organisation provides in efforts for a solution of the Cyprus question, the press release said.

At the same time, Christofias reiterated the readiness of the Republic of Cyprus to act as a bridge for dispatching assistance to Gaza. He wished that the recently approved resolution on the situation in the Gaza Strip, at the Security Council, be implemented, it added.

Ban Ki-moon extended his wishes to the President of the Republic for the new year and reiterated his personal interest in the question of Cyprus. The SG reassured that he will continue to support efforts for a solution in Cyprus, the press release concludes.

Since his election to the presidency, in February last year, Christofias has taken various initiatives to rekindle interest in the stalled dialogue between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities.

Talks, under UN auspices, between Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mehemt Ali Talat began in September last year with a view to finding a mutually agreed solution that will reunite the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion and continuing occupation.

The dialogue continues and on Monday, the two leaders are to meet again.
