[02] Another week of strikes in the public sector

The country is in the grip of a wave of strikes once again this week. University and technical college professors are in their fifth week of industrial action, putting at risk the entire semester. The health sector is also having its share of work stoppages, with outpatients' clinics closed until Wednesday and no operations being performed at state hospitals, due to a doctors' strike. In the meantime, state-employed agronomists are expected to decide tomorrow if they will go ahead with a new strike, while archaeological sites will remain closed for four day, due to a work stoppage by contract staff at the Culture Ministry.

A meeting was held today between Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos and Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyanni to discuss cooperation between the ministry and City Hall, in view of the upcoming Olympic Games to be held in Athens next year. Bakoyanni expressed the view that the message of the games should be more friendly, encouraging and optimistic, in order to ensure the attendance of Athenians, while Venizelos clarified that the event involved the whole of society and any caustic comments were uncalled for.

[06] Tensions escalate between Greek Church and Patriarchate

Tensions have escalated still further between the Church of Greece and the Orthodox Patriarchate in Constantinople, as both sides dig in their heels over the thorny issue of control over certain territories in northern Greece. Yesterday, the Patriarch sent a clear message to all those who doubt his jurisdiction, saying the disputed areas belonged to the Patriarchate and would remain under its control. A message from the Church of Greece was equally firm, with Archbishop Christodoulos' spokesman saying all aspects of the problem would be dealt with firmly at a Holy Synod meeting next month
